The strength of your muscles and joints in the body are the quality of being healthy and can withstand great forces and pressure in activities of daily living.
Sometime the musculoskeletal system may get weaken following the injury, due to diseases and deformities. Lack of muscle strength may give you a feeling of tiredness and frustration for not being able to perform daily tasks.
Prolong muscles weakness may eventually reduce the muscles mass and its function. As a result, muscles attached to joints possibly may reduce the joint movements. You may become dependent on assistive devices to move around.
The stretchiness or pliability of the muscles and tendons are the quality of toned muscles and have good muscle control during activities. The muscle is capable of stretching to its full length without tearing and losing its properties.
Similarly, the muscles may lose its function following injury, diseases, and deformities. You may feel pain; muscles may become floppy due to reduced muscle tone, and it may not be able to hold the joints in a position where there will be more chances of getting fall injury.
Effectiveness of strengthening exercises and stretching exercises in rehabilitation
A physiotherapist may help assess the tone of your muscles by gently flexing and relaxing your affected limb, measure muscle bulk, joint range of motion, and quantify muscle strength.
If the muscles are weak with a normal range of motion of joints, the rehabilitation mainly includes strengthening exercises such as static cycling, squatting, push-ups, upper limb exercises using dumbbells and elastic bands.
But if the joints and muscles are stiff, stretching exercises are done. The muscle is pulled opposite to its function to stretch. Stretching help relief pain by releasing tightness in the muscles, and help improve joint flexibility.
Strengthening and stretching exercises are both effective in rehabilitation. It is performed as a combination therapy, as rehabilitation not just include strengthening muscles, but it emphasizes on overall conditioning, minimizing disability and improving the general well being.
